Carters Lake is a 3,200-acre U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Coosawattee River in Gilmer and Murray counties, roughly two hours north of Atlanta and about halfway to Chattanooga. It is Georgia's deepest lake — averaging about 200 feet and reaching roughly 450 feet — held back by Carters Dam, the tallest earthen dam east of the Mississippi at 445 feet, completed in 1977 after fifteen years of construction. With 62 miles of rugged, steep, entirely undeveloped shoreline and clear water, it is widely considered one of the prettiest reservoirs in the state, ringed by the Carters Lake Wildlife Management Area.
